Formspring Question #226--Sovereign Immunity Edition

What do you think of the Sovereign Citizens movement?
Their belief the federal income tax is unconstitutional has some merit, but they are otherwise too close to anarchists for my taste. The idea of rejecting all form of law outside of English common law is too much for me.

They are too extreme for he FBI, too. The Sovereign Citizens are considered an extremist group. I am not familiar enough with them to know if they promote violence, but I am aware of the (conspiracy?) theory that Wesley Snipes had the book thrown at him for failure to file a tax return because he is allegedly sympathetic to their cause. I cannot find anything in legitimate news sources that say anything other than Snipes claimed the unconstitutionality of the federal income tax in his legal defense, which is something I imagine everyone in his shoes does,

The bottom line is I can appreciate groups who want to return to small government first principles, but I cannot bring myself to ally with everyone who flirts with the issue.

Eleven Year Old Mayor for a Day Renames Street After Justin Bieber

Her act is being considered an abuse of power, to which I say, "Pshaw!" Surely those people knew what they were getting when they gave power to a pre-teen girl. they just just be relieved they did not make the mistake of electing a boy that age instead. Main Street would have become Booger Avenue or something.

I can guarantee you Justin Bieber himself will not show up before the street's name is returned to Main Street even though he has been invited. The more I hear of him, the more i think he is an arrogant, selfish brat. I have always had a tough time caring about flash-in-the-pan teen idols.

Donald Trump's Faux Presidential Run Nets Him $160 Million

At least that is the way I read it. Donald Trump just re-upped with NBC for $160 million. The two parties were most certainly negotiating over a sum that large for quite some time overlapping trump’s flirtation with seeking the republican nomination for president. He was going through the motions solely as a bargaining tactic. NBC called his bluff and told him he would be replaced on The Celebrity Apprentice if he did not take the offer and instead sought the white House. He gave in millions richer than before.

Joe Scarborough tried the same tactic a few months ago shortly before his contract with MSNBC was up. You may recall he lightly hinted interest in running for office again. You can be assured his deal was not as sweet as trump’s, but the strategy of threatening to leave a media career for public office has a decent track record.

More specifically, long shot White House bids can net big bucks. Pat Buchanan, Al Gore, Mike Huckabee, Jesse Jackson, and Alan Keyes come immediately to mind. Sarah Palin has proven a run at the veep can be lucrative. Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain are banking--literally--on it for their future. As Trump has just shown, you do not even have to have any legitimacy to cash in, either. Anyone over the age of 35 whose fifteen minutes of fame have not yet been exhausted should take note.

The Alleged Curse of Babylon 5 Strikes Again

I do not mean that I have to review Star Trek: Voyager instead, though that does qualify as a sort of journey into perdition.

First, Tim Chaotes is killedd in a motorcycle accident. Then Richard Biggs dies from an aortic tear. Andreas Katsulas succumbs to lung cancers. Now Jeff Conaway has apparently overdosed on drugs. He has survived, but is in critical condition.

Playing a role on Babylon 5 is even more dangerous than being one of The Little Rascals.
