Formspring Question #225--Ordinance of Secession Edition

Will Rick Perry's talk of Texas secession come back to haunt him?
I doubt it. He has a well earned reputation for making exaggerated statements while pandering to crowds. Get used to it, assuming he does not hire a campaign strategist who will yank his leash when it looks like he is about to go overboard. If he continues to look like the real deal, there will be no shortage of consultants aiming for the job.

In spite of his loose tongue, perry is a careful man regarding his political career. He has spent a lot of time over the last few months combing through his history and testing whether anything he has said or done might serve as a death blow in earning the support of the usual suspects; businessmen, the religious right, tea partiers, etc. he would not have declared his candidacy if he did not have the seal of approval of those groups.

If anything, Perry secession talk will be brought up by MSNBC anchors and other far left pundits. They will trot out some progressive Texans you have never heard of to further comment on how Perry has ‘ruined” the Lone Star State. If Perry is the nominee, you might hear Barack Obama bring it up just to point out the irony of a “secessionist” running for president of the country he wanted to leave, but I see no more impact on Perry than Jeremiah Wright had on Obama. It will be an issue in the public conscious, but will not be strong enough to sway anyone’s opinion.
